How Can I Prevent Water Damage To My Furniture And Treadmill?

January 7th, 2010

I recently moved back into my parent’s house and my couch and treadmill were put into the garage for storage. My problem is that when it rains the garage becomes completely flooded with a good 1/2 inch of water. Do you have any suggestions on what I can put under the wood legs of the futon couch, so the water doesn’t damage it? For the treadmill, I would still like to use it while the mat underneath it doesn’t get wet. Thanks.

I store things in my grandmas basement by putting cinderblocks down and setting things on top of them or blocks then skids. Cinderblocks are inexpensive and you can probably get skids for free from your local newspaper or a factory.Good Luck:)

Cheap plastic crates work well to elevate and stabilize. You can find them at most discounters and you will need one for each leg. No matter how much rain or how deep the water gets, your futon will rise above it. You can use them for storage once you are out on your own again.

Buy some pallets and put a sheet of plywood over the ones for the treadmill then you can set the treadmill on it high and dry. The couch just needs 4 bricks one for each leg.

Buy some cement blocks or bricks from places such as a hardware store, Home Depot, etc.

i’d try pallets and some plastic tarps for the futon… reason i suggest pallets is they are usually free when you see them outside a major retailers loading dock !!! just ask before taking …!!! as far as the treadmill goes – i might do the smae thing – wouldn’t want any electrical thing getting wet – i just wouldn’t use the tarps – try some major amounts of damp rid to in the area where you are keeping these things and sweep that water out as soon as it gets there!!! don’t want the futon to end up all moldy!!
