What To Do With Spills on the Carpet

May 16th, 2011

How often has this scenario happened to you? You are standing, drinking a cool drink while visiting with a friend. Your kid comes running up behind you, bumps you, and down spills your drink on the carpet.

Beverage spills, however, don’t have to be a huge headache. On the contrary, if you attack the spill quick enough you can almost always keep a stain from setting in.

Cleaning up beverage spills doesn’t have to be a dramatic affair. The best advice we can give to our customers is to work quickly to get that spill out. The faster you move to get the liquid out of your carpet, the less liquid you will have seeping deeper and deeper in to the carpet.

Start by getting a clean towel for the spill. Blot the spill with the towel to absorb the liquid. If you have a bigger spill, however, using a wet vacuum can do the job even better.

You have to do different actions for different spills. Milk, for example, needs to be cleaned very carefully. Unlike other liquids, milk can leave a very strong, sour odor if it is not all absorbed and cleaned out of the carpet. It is important to clean where you see the spill, and then also blot and clean the area around the spill to make sure you don’t accidentally miss any milk that is still in the carpet.

Get a clean cloth and moisten it with cold water. Don’t use hot or warm water because that will cause the milk to stick to the fibers of the carpet. Dab the cold wet cloth on the area to rinse the milk out. Spray cup dish soap with some water on the area, and then blot again with water. Allow area to dry with towels.

Vinegar can also be very useful when cleaning up specific stains, such as coffee, tea stains, and soda. Put vinegar on a clean towel and blot it on the stain. Continue blotting with vinegar until the liquid becomes colorless. You still need to rinse out the vinegar you used off the carpet, so spray water on the area and dry the area off by blotting the carpet with another clean, dry towel. Be sure it is completely dried off.

The hardest liquid stains usually to get out of carpets are things high in food dye and sugar ingredients, such as chocolate drinks or juice. Work to penetrate the stain by using a dishwashing detergent first. Then spray the area with cup ammonia and a quart of water. Continue the process until the stain comes out clean. Spray the area with water to soak up all the liquid. Pat it dry and make sure all liquid is absorbed.

Keep your carpet looking its best by taking care of the stain quickly. Don’t wait until the stains sets in before you start moving to get it cleaned up.
