The Expert Advice for a Green Toilet Clean

September 5th, 2011

Most of us hate this particular job, let’s be honest. It’s one of the most unappealing, but we should acknowledge it’s one of the most important as well.

Cleaning the toilet frequently removes bacteria and other nasties that can spread (and cause contamination or infection), but also enhances the appearance of your bathroom to any visitors. There’s nothing worse than visiting a house with an unsightly toilet. A clean bathroom is a courtesy you extend not only to members of your family but to any visitors to your home as well.

In toilet cleaning, there’s no need to flush any chemicals out to waterways.

What that means is, there’s no need to clean our toilets with heavy duty chemicals that just end up being flushed into our drains and rivers. Here are some simple tips to care of things naturally.

Doctor Knows Best: I bet you’ve never given your toilet two Vitamin C tablets and said “I’ll be back in two hours to check on you”…. well, you can! By simply dropping two Vitamin C tablets into the bowl, leaving for a couple of hours, on your return you simply scrub any stubborn stains to find they will shift easily.

Scrub Tough Stains: For difficult or hard to remove stains or rings around the toilet bowl, mix up a paste of lemon juice and borax. Just add enough lemon juice to the borax to make a paste. Apply the paste to the stained area and leave to sit for around fifteen minutes and then return and using a scrubbing brush, remove the stains.

Don’t Be Afraid to Scrub Hard: For any hard to remove stains (or rings) around the toilet bowl, mix a paste of lemon juice and Borax. Add enough lemon juice to the Borax to make a malleable paste and apply it to the stained area. Leave it to sit for around fifteen minutes then, using a scrubbing brush, remove the stains.

These are just some chemical-free techniques to get your toilet sparkling, and there are many more out there. Using natural materials is not only better for the environment, using items like lemon juice, eucalyptus or vanilla can bring about more pleasant smells in the bathroom than most chemical cleaners will.
