Marble and Natural Stone Cleaning

July 1st, 2011

Natural stone floors can bring a feeling of luxury to any home. The natural appeal of this style of flooring is almost unrivaled. Marble and granite are a couple of the more favored types of natural stone due to their versatility and luster.

But as with all other types of flooring, you can’t just buy it, have it installed, and leave it be. Even though natural stone floors can add so much to a home they can be delicate and will require some routine maintenance to ensure a long life.

Marble floors are very susceptible to scratches. Because of this you should keep most sharp items away from it. If you do have any furniture on marble you want to make sure you have soft coasters under the feet to prevent any scarring. Make sure to clean your marble floor regularly to prevent any debris from creating scratches.

Routine cleaning of marble can be done with hot water and a mild detergent. Use a micro-fiber mop for best results. If you have a tough stain add a touch of ammonia to the water and detergent. Make sure to use the ammonia sparingly. Using too much can affect the natural shine that marble is famous for.

Granite stains easily. So you remedy that as you would any other type of flooring. Clean up any spills immediately. Make sure to wipe away all spills thoroughly. Then you need to make sure to remove any residue from your spilled item. Do this by cleaning the area with a clean towel or sponge and a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Afterward, rinse the area completely with clean water and then dry thoroughly.

If you do end up with some type of staining on your granite it’s not the end of the world. There are plenty of items available for taking care of just such a problem. Bleach, mineral spirits, and acetone are a few items that can help you get certain stains out of your granite. Make sure to follow the directions for any solution you decide to use. For everyday food stains you can use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia.

Owning any sort of natural stone in your residence is a brilliant way to incorporate some pure elegance and sophistication to your living surroundings. However, this kind of commitment does require you to put in the work to make sure it is correctly cared for. What’s the point of investing that amount of money on natural stone if you are not planning to care for it?
