Moving entails three separate processes: finding a place to stay, packing up your possessions, and of course, moving into the new home and unpacking. Chances are you might be dreading having to handle this last step.
You will need a good plan of action to get through the unpacking of your new home. If you did a good job packing, including the proper labeling of your boxes, this should not be a problem. Give yourself plenty of time to unpack by taking time off work, hiring a babysitter, and getting some friends to help you.
Ask for help from family and friends. Put together a realistic schedule and include time to decompress periodically. Allowing yourself a few minutes here and there throughout the day will give you a chance to take a look at how the unpacking and organizing is going.
You will want to unpack your essentials first. Hopefully you labeled your boxes appropriately when you packed and know where these items are located. This can make your first night in your new home much less stressful.
Next, begin unpacking the most necessary and utilized areas of the house. Don’t try to unpack everything immediately. Let each family member unpack and place their personal belongings and work on beds and clothes for starters.
If you aren’t able to unpack your bed, having an air mattress available can make your first night or nights more comfortable. Also, when unloading, try to pre-stage important boxes so you can easily identify them to unpack first.
Another priority area should be the kitchen, especially if you moved frozen or refrigerated foods. The sooner you are able to get the kitchen area up-and-running, the sooner you will be able to make foods you prefer and stop spending money on take-out or delivery.
Just remember to unpack the important things and make sure each family member has access to clothes and toiletries. Then, in an orderly fashion, make your way room to room unpacking and, before you know it, you will be settled into your new home.
