How Quickly Can A Roof Be Cleaned?

September 16th, 2011

When I first cleaned a tile roof (it was my own), it took a total of about 18 hours. At that time I only knew how to pressure clean a roof. I didn’t use anything but water and pressure.

Since then I’ve learned how to chemically clean roofs. Not only is chemical cleaning much easier and quicker, it is also safer for the person doing the cleaning.

How fast is chemical cleaning? I would say that every hour of pressure cleaning could be replaced by five minutes of chemical cleaning. Yes that is a very big difference.

It so happens that chemical cleaning is also longer-lasting. The chemicals are more thorough at killing microscopic organisms. The result is a roof that doesn’t need to be cleaned as often. Mold returns sooner when its root and spores remain alive.

In my area, a typical house is around twenty-four hundred square feet. That’s about how big my family’s house is – the one that took almost twenty hours to pressure wash. Most of the houses in my area are one story, but I sometimes clean two story houses.

Nowadays, it only takes me about two hours to clean a roof. This counts the time required for setting up as well as taking measures so keep the plants from being damaged from the chemicals. Those measures include putting plastic tarps over plants and placing containers in spots to catch the chemical drip.

Although I finish the roofs fairly quickly now, some jobs end up lasting five or six hours. Besides cleaning roofs, I often then power wash their screened enclosure, pool deck, gutters, exterior walls, driveway, etc. If it’s a big house and a hot day, it takes a long time. By the early afternoon I feel like I’m ready to faint (although I haven’t actually yet).

Power washing helps bring in more profit but I enjoy the jobs that only involve roof cleaning. It feels good to clean a roof in about two hours. One thing’s for sure: I’ll never go back to power washing roofs again.
