At certain times of the year it is not uncommon to want to attempt those spring cleaning jobs that have been put off for so long. For generations, some of the most effective cleaning solutions have been prepared using items that may be in ones cupboard.

Attempting the oven is often a much hated task, however, it can be cleaned quite easily. Fill a bowl with ammonia and place on the top shelf. On the bottom shelf, place a bowl of water. Leave until the following morning and remove the bowls. Shake some baking soda into the oven and leave for up to ten minutes. Wipe the soda and any grease from the oven. The grease and soda come off quite easily.

Extractors can become clogged with grease around the mesh, and this causes them to have a reduced efficiency. In two litres of hot water mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda, and dip a cloth into the cleaning solution, then add a few drops of white vinegar directly to the cloth and wipe the mesh on the hood.

To remove lime scale build up in a kettle, fill the appliance, with half water and half white vinegar. Boil and leave overnight. In the morning re-boil the kettle several times with fresh water before using. The kettle will use less energy, and will save money, after lime scale has been removed.

To shampoo carpets, mix one cup of distilled vinegar with five litres of water. To ensure that the carpet is colour fast, clean a small area first. A clean, soft brush should be used to clean with.
