Giving birth to a baby is the greatest and yet caring for your baby is the most important for its growth. You and your friends and relatives may have bought a lot of toys for your baby. Of course, it is good for the baby to play with its toys. But, you have to clean the toys properly or otherwise they can become dangers to your baby.
Babies like to put their hands and toys into their mouths as suckling is one of the most important reflex actions for babies. But, if the toys are unclean, babies are actually putting dirt, germs and bacteria into their mouths. Therefore, it is important that you not only remove the dirt but also kill the bacteria on the toys. Some mothers use soapy water and even bleach to clean baby toys. Sometimes, residues from these chemical may be left on toys and babies will get in touch with them.
Instead of harmful chemicals, there are natural ways to clean the baby toys. Most natural cleaners are editable and can be found in your kitchen. Also, they are inexpensive and easy to use. For baby toys, the best and simplest natural cleaners that I recommend are baking soda and white vinegar. These two natural cleaners are suitable for most of your baby toys like plastic toys and stuffed toys (except the very expensive stuffed ones).
For plastic toys, you can first mix 1 cup of distilled water and 1 cup of vinegar in a clean bucket. Soak the toys into the mixture for around 15 minutes. Then use a clean rag to rub the surface of the toys. Allow the toys to air dry. If you wish to clean your toy more often, you put the water and vinegar mixture into a spray bottle. Spray on the toys and wipe clean the surface.
Cleaning with white vinegar and baking soda is not limited to plastic toys only. Stuffed toys can also be cleaned with white vinegar and baking soda. If you wish to hand wash the stuffed toys, gather them in a sink or tub. Sprinkle some baking soda onto the toys and wait for 10 – 15 minutes. Then, add water to the tub and wash the toys. Finally, rinse the toys with water and vinegar solution. Again, if you do not like the smell of vinegar, you can rinse with water one more time. If you use machine to wash the stuffed toys, simply use baking soda as your laundry powder. Add 3 cupful of white vinegar to water during rinse cycle.
How often should I clean the baby toys is a very good question to ask. There is no absolute answer and it totally depends on your available time. My suggestion is you should clean them at least once a week. But, if you notice that your baby catches a cold or suffers from diarrhea, you may have to clean your baby toys more often. Also, if your baby always share toys with other kids, you may wish to clean the toys immediately after their playing to prevent cross contamination.
