Sometimes you will be in your bathroom using your sink, and the water will keep flowing out of the drain hole. Or, you might be showering and you will notice an inch or two of water flooding around your ankles. This is probably a sign of blocked drains. Clogged drain pipes are really annoying, but it is something you will eventually have to deal with in your lifetime.
If you keep having a clogged drain in your bathroom, people might think you are extremely unhygienic. There are lots of mold and harmful bacteria that live in a blocked drain that can give you nasty diseases if you don’t clean them right away. Try to learn the various ways to clear a drain so you can stay healthy.
Your drain is clogged because a mixture of dirt, sand, and debris have combined with loose strands of hair while you’re in the shower. This mixture will become big clumps that can clog your drain. The drain gets even more clogged when stuff like body wash, soap, detergent, conditioner, and shampoo mix in with the clumps. They become huge masses that do not let any water to pass through, which will completely obstruct your drain. These types of clogs will cause flooding to occur. When you start seeing that the water is flooding your bathtub or the sink, you need to try to clear the blockage ASAP.
For those that want to fix their clogged drain as swiftly as they can, try removing the plug in the drain. Plugs in your bathroom sink are very easy to take out, since all it takes is pulling them with your hands to remove them. At other times, this method won’t work, and you will have to take apart the hook underneath the sink that keeps your plug stationary. For bathtubs, either unscrew your stopper or take apart the overflow plate.
Once you remove the stopper from the drain, you will usually be able to see the source of blockage. Reach down into the drain pipe and pull out as much of the blockage as possible. Sometimes you might need a device like a wire hanger to scoop out the hard to reach areas of the debris. Once you remove the ball of tangled hair, shampoo, and detergent, it will most likely solve your problem.
If that method does not work, you might have to use a plunger to remove clogs that you cannot remove by hand. Cover up the opening of the drainpipe with some wet paper towels to increase the sucking power of the plunger. Put the mouth of the plunger over the drainpipe opening and move it up and down at a steady pace. When you release, the blockage should drain away immediately.
Once you have tried every method and you still cannot clear your drain, you are going to have to buy some chemical solution. Be warned though, try not to do this unless you absolutely have to because it might damage your sink or bathtub.
If you are unable to fix blocked drains using these methods, it is probably time to call in a professional plumber with drain clearing experience. They have a variety of tools that will help you clear that drain if you find that you cannot finish the job yourself.
