May 8th, 2011

Deal with oil spills on the carpet as you might an ocean-based disaster by acting swiftly. Get your hands on a number of clean towels and blot out the spill, getting rid of as much of the oil as is possible. Exchange each towel with a new one after they get soaked, and repeat this process until no more liquid can be absorbed.

For smaller sized spills, sprinkle baking soda on the affected area. Clean it off after several minutes, just enough time for the baking soda to soak up the excess oil, cut off grease, and deodorize the area. A small amount of rubbing alcohol is also reported to be successful in taking care of spots from oils spills. Just don’t apply directly, since this could cause the carpet color to fade. Instead, pour some on an absorbent cloth then blot the area, working from the exterior and moving in until all the oil is soaked up.

Nail polish remover, the kind that lists amyl acetate in its ingredients, is usually a good cleaning agent for machine oil spills on the carpet. Put it on by using a white cloth or paper towel. Once no more stain can be soaked up, wash out the amyl acetate using a dry solvent.

Cooking oil, salad oil, vegetable oil, and other edible oils can be removed from the carpet via a mild soap solution. To do so, measure teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent to one cup of lukewarm water. Apply with a bottle sprayer and then blot out using a cloth or towel. Repeat this process until your towels are cleanest after contact with the area.

A spot removal kit might also prove useful when removing oil-based paint. Adhere to the product guidelines and always try out first in an unseen area. Be sure you rinse out cleaning agents from the carpet thoroughly. Soap remains will not just make carpet look soiled, it can also grab more dirt.

For car oil spills on the carpet you can use an ammonia solution that consists of one table spoon ammonia and one cup water. Again, try it out in an unseen area first since ammonia is known to be a harsh substance.

Often, these different techniques may be interchanged and used for almost all varieties of oil spills on the carpet. Just don’t forget to follow the fundamental tenets of carpet cleaning such as rinsing well and drying out carpet completely. Keep to the basic guidelines and you’ll get cleaner, grease-free carpet.
